National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day & the Legacy of BRASS
By Eugene Collins
February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), a time to recognize the impact of HIV on Black communities and to promote education, testing, and treatment. While progress has been made, barriers such as racism and mistrust in healthcare continue to hinder access to care. This year's theme, "Engage, Educate, Empower: Uniting to End HIV/AIDS in Black Communities," highlights the ongoing struggle for health equity.
Founded in 1998 by Rev. A.J. Johnson, the Baton Rouge AIDS Society (BRASS) has been a leader in HIV awareness and prevention. What began as a grassroots effort has evolved into a trusted nonprofit organization serving Baton Rouge and its surrounding areas. With free and confidential testing, outreach, and education, BRASS remains dedicated to making a positive impact.
